Abstract
This study aimed to longitudinally analyze the subjective health trajectories of middle-aged and older adults with disabilities and identify differences and predictive factors between metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas to propose measures for promoting health among middle-aged and older adults with disabilities. Using data from the Disability and Life Dynamics Panel from Wave 1 (2018) to Wave 5 (2022), multi-group latent growth modeling was conducted with 3,289 middle-aged and older adults with disabilities aged 40 and above. The results showed that subjective health among middle-aged and older adults with disabilities improved significantly, starting at 2.349 points in 2018 and increasing by an average of .025 points annually. While metropolitan residents initially showed higher health levels, non-metropolitan residents had a higher rate of change, leading to a narrowing gap over time. Predictive factors for subjective health trajectories varied by residential area: regarding the intercept, the number of friends, neighbors, and acquaintances had a significant effect only in non-metropolitan areas, while disability type showed a stronger negative effect in metropolitan areas, and the degree of activity limitation showed a stronger negative effect in non-metropolitan areas, confirming structural differences in predictive factors between regions. Based on these findings, this study proposed tailored approaches that consider regional characteristics for promoting health among middle-aged and older adults with disabilities.
