사사기 13장의 나타난 여호와의 사자는 문자 그대로 이해하 면 여호와께서 보낸 사자이기 때문에 여호와의 사자의 정체성을 여호와나 그 리스도라고 주장하려면 여호와의 사자의 정체가 여호와가 보낸 사자가 아님 을 보여줄 강력한 증거가 필요하다. 이 소론에서 사사기 13장의 “여호와의 사자”의 정체를 여호와나 그리스도로 주장한 주요 논거들을 검토한 결과 사사기 13장의 “여호와의 사자”를 문자 그대로 여호와의 사자가 아닌 여호와나 그리스도로 이해해야 할 타당한 이유를 찾지 못했다. 사사기 13장의 여호와의 사자의 정체가 여호와임을 주장하기 위한 논증 은 모두 약점을 드러냈다. 구약 다른 여러 곳에서 여호와의 사자가 여호와로 지칭되었기 때문에 사사기 13장의 여호와의 사자도 여호와로 볼 수 있다는 논증이 있었지만 구약의 여러 본문에서는 여전히 “여호와의 사자”는 여호와께서 주신 임무를 수행하는 전령의 역할을 수행하고 있다. 따라서 사사기 13장의 여호와의 사자의 정체는 사사기 13장의 본문을 통해 밝혀야 한다. 사사기 13장의 여호와의 사자는 초월적인 여호와가 인간과 직접 대화 하는 것이 어울리지 않아 완곡어법(euphemism)을 사용한 것이라는 논증은 구약 다른 곳에서 여호와께서 직접 인간과(예, 아브라함, 모세) 이야기 한 것 을 설명하지 못한다. 사사기 13장 22절에서 마노아가 여호와의 사자를 하나 님이라고 부른 것이 여호와의 사자를 여호와로 보는 증거로 인용되지만 이 것은 전지적 시점을 가진 내레이터의 해설이 아닌 등장인물 마노아의 판단 이기 때문에 그 정확성을 담보할 수 없다. 무엇보다도 사사기 13장의 여호와 의 사자를 여호와로 보는 견해는 여호와의 사자가 자신을 여호와와 구분하 는 16절을 설명하기에 역부족이다. 구문론적으로 여호와의 사자의 사자와 여호와를 동격의 연계관계(appositional construct)로 보아 사자가 곧 여호와라고 말하 는 주장도 있었지만 고대근동언어의 구문에서 사자와 신명이 나란히 나올 때 일반적으로 동격관계가 아닌 종속관계(subordinate relationship)를 의미 하기 때문에 이 주장도 받아들이기 어렵다. 사사기 13장의 여호와의 사자를 미리 오신 그리스도로 보는 견해의 논거 도 여호와의 사자를 문자 그대로 여호와의 사자로 이해하는 것을 뒤엎을 만큼 강력하지 못하다. 이사야 9장 6절의 메시야 호칭인 기묘자는 구약에서 메시야에게만 붙여진 고유명사가 아니라 일반명사이기 때문에 사사기 13장 18절에서 여호와의 사자를 묘사하는 형용사 기묘자를 메시야를 묘사하는 형용사로 이해해야 할 이유가 없다. 예수 그리스도가 성육신하여 이 땅에서 사역 할 동안에 신약에 여호와의 사자가 나타나지 않은 것이 사사기 13장을 포함 한 구약의 여호와의 사자가 예수 그리스도임을 말하는 것이라는 주장도 받 아들이기 어렵다. 예수 그리스도가 육신이 되어 이 땅에서 사역할 동안에도“주의 천사”가 나타났고(마 2:13, 19; 눅 2:9) 구약의 모든 여호와의 사자를 “an angel of Yahweh”가 아니라 “the angel of Yahweh”로 번역하여 특정한 한 사자로 이해하는 것도 담보되지 않은 가설에 불과하다.
Abstract
The messenger of Yahweh in Judges 13, literally, is understood as a messenger sent by Yahweh. If one contends that the messenger of Yah-weh in Judges 13 is Yahweh or Christ, one should provide strong proof which can deny the literal understanding of the messenger of Yahweh. Having investigated the arguments for identifying the messenger of Yah-weh in Judges 13 as Yahweh or Christ, I conclude that it is most plausible to identify the messenger of Yahweh as it literally means. Every argument for identifying the messenger of Yahweh as Yahweh discloses its weakness. Though some identify the messenger of Yahweh as Yahweh citing other places of the Old Testament where the messen-ger of Yahweh is Yahweh himself, there are still many passages of the Old Testament in which the messenger of Yahweh is distinguished from Yahweh. It is also claimed that since transcendent God could not com- municate directly with man, God, in the form of angel, communicated with man. However, we read other passages where transcendant God communicated directly with man like Abraham and Moses. Manoah’s judgment about the identification of the messenger of Yahweh as God in Judges 13:22 is not warranted because that is just a character’s thought. Syntactically though some view messenger of Yah-weh as an appositional construct, this contention is to be dismissed. When a messenger appears with a di-vine name, generally, the relationship is to be viewed as not appositional but subordinate. Most of all, if we identify the messenger of Yahweh of Judges 13 as Yahweh, it is difficult to explain Judges 13:16 where the messenger of Yahweh clearly distinguished himself from Yahweh. It is also shown that identifying the messenger of Yahweh as Christ is not convincing. Since the messianic appellation (wonderful one) of Isaiah 9:6 is not a proper name only for the coming Messiah, there is no reason to count (wonderful) in Judges 13:18 as the descrip-tion of Messiah. Moreover, it is not acceptable that the messenger of Yahweh did not appear while Christ was in the world. The angel of the Lord appears while Jesus was on the earth in Matthew 2:13, 19 and Luke 2:9. It is also not warranted that messenger of Yah-weh in the many places of the Old Testament is the same one messenger of Yahweh.
