종교개혁과 한국교회의 종말론적 연관성에 관한 고찰

인간은 누구나 자기가 살고 있는 시대의 역사적인 상황에 영향을 받고 살아간다. 모든 신자들도 역시 종말신앙을 그들의 성경해석과 시대정신에 의해 형성해 왔다. 마틴 루터와 존 칼빈도 그런 면에서 예외는 아니었다. 그들의 주된 신학적 관심은 칭의론에 초점을 둔 구원론에 두었던 것도 사실이지만, 그들도 종말론에 지대한 관심을 가지고 있었으며, 종말론은 모든 신앙에 있어서 중심적인 역할을 하는 것도 부인할 수 없다. 한국 기독교는 초기부터 전쟁으로 얼룩진 역사적 상황으로 인하여 종말론적 신앙이 절실했으며, 독특한 신앙적 특성들이 형성되었다. 더군다나 일제강점기를 경험하면서 형성된 한국교회의 종말신앙 속에는 천년왕국사상이 매우 중요한 요소로 자리 잡았다. 일제의 식민통치가 강화되면 될수록, 한국 기독교인들의 종말신앙은 더욱 더 개인주의적이고 내세지향적인 차원으로 편향되었다. 이러한 상황에서 선교사들을 통해 소개된 세대주의적 전천년설의 영향력이 지대하게 나타났고, 예수 그리스도의 재림과 그 시기에 보다 강한 관심을 갖게 되었다. 종교개혁500주년을 맞이한 이 시점에서, 종교개혁과 한국교회 사이의 종말론적 연관성을 고찰해 보는 것은 의미 있는 과제가 아닐 수 없다. 루터와 칼빈은 그들의 종말론을 칭의론과 예정론을 비롯한 구원론적 토대 위에서 형성했으며, 천년왕국사상을 부인하면서 교회개혁을 자기들에게 주어진 시대적 사명으로 인식하였다. 그들은 그들의 내세에 대한 종말론적 소망 때문에, 현세에 주어진 사명을 소홀히 하지 않았다. 그런 면에서, 지금이야말로 한국교회의 종말신앙에 대한 재검토가 필요한 시점이 아닐 수 없다. 경을 중심으로 한 구약 전체의 흐름 및 민수기의 신학과 그 구조의 배경에서 ‘별’ 신탁을 파악하는 서론적인 연구 후에, 본고의 중심본문인 민수기 24:15-19을 텍스트 언어학적으로 분석한다. 이 작업의 결과로, 창세기 3:15에서 약속된 ‘후손’에 대한 개념은 아브라함언약의 축복(창 12:1-3), 야곱을 통한 유다의 축복예언(창 49:8-12), 그리고 발람의 ‘별’ 신탁을 통해 이스라엘의 축복예언으로 이어졌음을 밝힐 뿐 아니라, 발람의 ‘별’은 다윗 왕을 넘어 결국 장차 오실 예수 그리스도를 내다보고 있다는 것을 논증한다. 그러므로 본고는 구약의 메시아본문 중 하나인 ‘별’ 신탁에 대한 포괄적이고도 집중적인 연구를 통해, 구약의 메시아적 인물은 후대의 신앙 공동체의 고백적 산물이 아니라 구약에서 이미 그 형태와 특성을 달리하여 그 개념이 배태되고 있었다는 것을 주장하고자 한다.
Abstract
Human beings live their lives under the influence of their present and historical social contexts. Every believer forms their eschatological faith by their biblical hermeneutics and their zeitgeist as well. Reformers such as Martin Luther and John Calvin are not exceptions in this regard. Their theological concerns were mainly soteriological, focused on the doctrine of justification by faith. But it is of note that they had great interests in eschatology. In a broader Christian context, eschatology is a central Christian doctrine that impacts every other article of faith. From the beginning of early Korean Christianity, the war-torn historical contexts shaped the outlook of Korean Christians toward a fervent eschatology belief. The central thrust of eschatology conditioned the emergence of the distinctive features of the Korean Christian faith. Moreover, thetraumatic historical contexts of the Japanese occupation caused the foundational eschatological Korean faith to merge with millennialism as well. As the Japanese colonial rule became more severe, Korean eschatology was fatalistically oriented toward the individualistic and the otherworldly. Moreover, under the strong influence of dispensational premillennialism, the Kingdom of God was limited to the time of Christ’s second coming. In commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, it is meaningful to carefully consider the eschatological relevance between Reformation and the Korean Church. Luther and Calvin formulated their eschatological faith on the basis of the doctrine of justification by faith and predestination. Denying to accept millennialism, they perceived the task of church reformation as their mission. Because of their eschatological hope for the age to come, they did not neglect their task in this age. It is time for the Korean Christians to reconsider the whole question of eschatology.
