Abstract
Messianism continues to be the subject of fierce debate, not only between early Christianity and Judaism, but also today in different hermeneutic positions. In particular, the critical position fundamentally understands that the Christological Messianic figure is the product of the latter Christian generations and thus not recognized at all in the Old Testament. The premise of this approach lies in the assumption that prophetic attributes are not acknowledged. This kind of approach, however, fails to grasp the Messianic figure that is delivered by the unified final text. So the study of the Messianic figure is needed to look at the final text and its overall flow. Thus, through the study of Balaam's ‘Star’ oracle(Nu 24:15-19), which was a critical issue in the Second Temple period and early Christianity, in the light of the unity of the Bible and progressive revelation, this articleargues Messianic figure was already known from the beginning of the Old Testament and it was gradually developed until fully achieved through Jesus Christ. This study examines the ‘Star’ oracle in the whole flow of the Old Testament centering on the Pentateuch as well as on the book of Numbers and its entire structure. After these introductory works, it focuses on Numbers 24:15-19 using text-linguistics as the methodology. The result of the works show not only that the ‘seed’ promised in Genesis 3:15 is reflected in the series of blessings of the Abrahamic covenant(Gen 12:1-3), of Judah through Jacob's prophecy(Gen. 49:8-12), and of Israel through the ‘Star’ oracle but also that the Balaam’s ‘Star’ oracle foresees Jesus Christ who is coming after king David. Therefore, through a comprehensive and intensive study of the ‘star’ oracle, this study concludes that the Messianic figure is not the product of later time but originally manifested in the Old Testament in the different forms and characters.
