Abstract

Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved Psalms in the Old Testament from the ancient Israel to our modern world. Scholarly efforts to interpret this psalm show that this psalm describes personal care and love that Yahweh, described as the shepherd and the host, provides His people. This psalms has been analysed from various scholarly approaches, but there is no scholarly consensus on the literary structure and meaning of this psalm. This study presents a Hebrew poetic analysis in order to identify literary devices and poetic features in Psalm 23. One of the major features of this psalm is the role of the imagery within which the personal care and love of Yahweh is provided as well as the changing the settings following the thematic flow from shepherd's provision to protection and that of host. This paper first deals with literary structure of this Psalm through Hebrew poetic analysis. For this, we need to decode this psalms by Hebrew poetic elements such as colon, strophe, and stanza. Tabulation of these poetic elements helps us to understand the structure of this psalm. Based on this structural analysis, then this study discusses about the imagery of this psalm. Psalms 23 consists of two major metaphorical figures, shepherd and host, to represent Yahweh’s provision and protection toward His people. Two stanzas of this psalms contains metaphorical figure of Yahweh: shepherd and host respectively. The spatiality of this psalm also contribute to produce meaning by which provide settings of Yahweh’s provision and protection toward His people. In a summary, this study has demonstrated a process of finding meaning from Hebrew poetry in which the structure and imagery are used to deliver its rhetorical effect on the text.
