출애굽기에 등장하는 열 가지 재앙은 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을애굽으로부터 해방시키기 위한 구원의 방편이었던 동시에 애굽을 향한심판의 방편이기도 했다. 이 애굽의 재앙 시리즈는 후대에 있을 재앙이나 심판의 모티프가 되었고, 유대 문헌(구약, 위경, 외경)과 초기 기독교 문헌에서 발견된다. 요한계시록의 대접 심판 시리즈와 마찬가지로, 나팔 심판 시리즈는 애굽 재앙들이 기본 모티프로 취해지지만 그 재앙의 범위나형태가 변화되기도 하고, 구약 예언서나 다른 유대 문헌들에 등장하는 심판/재앙의 이미지들(특별히 종말적 이미지에 사용된 요소들)이 추가되어 더욱 웅장하고 두려운 종말적 심판으로 묘사되기도 한다. 대체적으로 추가적 배경 본문들은 예언서에서 찾을 수 있으며, 이방 나라들 혹은 언약에 불성실한 하나님의 백성들을 향한 심판의 메시지들이다. 특정 나팔 심판에 있어서는 예언서의 본문이 애굽 재앙 본문보다 더 강력한 배경본문으로 종종 고려되기도 하는데 (예를 들면, 다섯 번째 나팔 심판의 경우 요엘서 1-2장), 그 예언서의 본문들이 대부분 심판의 메시지이고, 이미 그 본문이 애굽 재앙을밑그림으로 취했을 가능성이 있기 때문에 여전히 출애굽 모티프는 더 근본적으로 고려되어져야 하는 배경본문으로 인식될 필요가 있다. 요한계시록에서의 출애굽 모티프 사용에 대한 연구는 그 사용의 빈도나 정도, 사용된 구절 속에서의 의미에 국한되는 것이 아니라, 요한계시록의 전반적인 이해와 해석에 영향을 미친다고 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
The Egyptian plagues in Exodus are God’s device to save his people and to punish Egypt. The Egyptian plagues became a paradigm for the future judgment toward the oppressors of God’s people in the OT, intertestamental literature, and the NT. The book of Revelation uses the Egyptian plagues as motives in the series of trumpet judgments as well as bowl judgments. The Egyptian plagues are implied by adding some elements that are usually used in the context of judgment or eschaton (in the OT or Jewish literature). These changes are accomplished by expanding the original elements, and/or by changing features from original Exodus pattern. Sometimes for specific bowl judgments, passages of the Prophets look like better background texts than Exodus motives: for example, Joel 1-2 in the fifth trumpet judgment. However, it is still possible that Joel 1-2 itself takes the Egyptian plagues as its background text. Therefore, the Exodus motives need to be considered as the more fundamental background texts than any OT texts especially in trumpet judgments as well as bowl judgments.
