Abstract

There have been a number of attempts to interpret Revelation 12 from ancient mythological perspective. There are, of course, similar elements to the myth of war, but there is no other way to question whether it can contain the theology of war in Revelation 12. This thesis aims to study the background of the Old Testament and early Jewish literature, focusing on the use of three motifs (confrontation motif between the woman's offspring and the serpent's offspring, exodus motif, holy war motif) appearing in each paragraph of Revelation 12 (Rev 12:1-6, 7-12, 13-17). Against this backdrop, in this thesis I aim to address the limitations of mythical interpretations and identify why John used these motifs to describe the apocalyptic war between Church and Satan. The purpose of this study is to analyze the essence of the eschatological war theology of Revelation 12. Revelation 12 uses three motifs overlapping and this tradition is also found in the Old Testament and early Jewish literature. In particular, I would like to look over Habakkuk 3 & Ps Sol 2 as the New Testament use of the Old Testament. This study will examine what kind of war theology is presented through three motifs and how each motif is connected. First, according to Ronning's argument, it is the exodus motif that developed from “the confrontation between the two descendants of Genesis 3:15” to the national level. In this confrontation, when God fights for the offspring of woman, it becomes a pattern of holy war. Three motifs are organically linked to the theme of salvation and judgment for the people of God, starting with Genesis 3. At that time, the church community was in a state of being deluded by false teachings due to emperor worship. John seems to have used three motifs in each paragraph to effectively show God's salvation and judgment.
