본 연구는 다문화 사회에 대한 이해와 수용을 취지로 제작되는 ‘다문화영화(multi-cultural film)’에 대한 다문화인의 해석 체계를 논의하고자 하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 인권영화의 일환으로서 저예산으로 제작되는 다문화 영화들에 대해, 학계는 주로 텍스트 분석을 통해 그 구조적 특징을 규명하고 사회문화적 의미를 짚어낸다. 그러나 이는 다문화 영화라는 텍스트에 대한 제한된 이해만을 전달한다. 이에 따라 연구진은 다문화 가정 자녀들이 중심 캐릭터들로 등장하는 <황구>(2014)를 다문화 아동들이 현장에서 관람하게 한 후, 그들의 경험을 자신들의 일상적 삶과 결부시키는 과정을 관찰하고, 다문화영화에 대한 그들의 해석체계를 규명하고자 하였다. 연구방법으로는 초점집단 연구, 현장조사, 문화기술지 등 질적 연구방법을 활용하였다. 이를 통해 연구대상자들이 자신들의 삶의 경험과 지식에 근거, 다문화 캐릭터들의 입장에 대해 공감하고 그들의 감정에 몰입하면서 텍스트에 의미를 부여하는 과정을 심도 깊게 관찰하고자 했다. 그 결과 다문화 영화에 대한 해석과 평가가 다각적인 맥락에서 시행될 필요가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This article aims to understand the way children from multi-cultural familial background decode the meaning of multi-cultural films. With the flux of people from various countries, South Korean filmmakers produce films that advocate the co-existence of people from the diverse sociocultural background. Low-budget multi-cultural films have received the attention of scholars. Proposing to consider them as a genre, some scholars have analyzed their generic characteristics. While classifying textual conventions, others have tried to highlight these films’ ideological limit. It is against this textual approach that we suggest to analyze the way children from multi-cultural familial background make sense of <Hwang-ku>(2014). The film focalizes multi-cultural children who struggle to assimilate to Korean society. Facing racial and ethnic discrimination in both private and public relationship, they finally overcome the harsh situation with the help of sympathetic Koreans. We conducted a group interview with seven multi-cultural children. Employing an ethnographic research method, we want to understand the way their position in the social structure and their life experiences and knowledge influence them to interpret the films. By doing so, we want to highlight the relationship between everyday practice and reading practice.
