Abstract

Louise McCully and Elizabeth McCully were Canadian Presbyterian women missionaries who came to Korea in the early days of Protestant missions and devoted themselves to women’s education and leadership training. As biological sisters, they contributed numerous articles to the Korea Mission Field(KMF) during overlapping periods. These writings functioned not merely as reports of missionary work, but as materials that revealed their respective theological perspectives and understandings of mission. This study aims to examine how their identity as women missionaries and their mission theology were shaped and expressed through their KMF contributions. To this end, the study analyzes recurring themes in their articles to identify the distinctive features of their missionary thought. While Louise emphasized women’s ministry, interdenominational cooperation, and institutional training, Elizabeth focused on the personal faith and death of missionaries, as well as the memory and emotions of the missionary community. Although their styles of writing and thematic concerns differed, both shared a common identity as women missionaries who sought to interpret their work and embed theological meaning through writing. Their writings offer valuable insight into both the institutional development of early Korean missions and the spiritual sensibilities of the faith community. This study also suggests the potential of missionary writing by women to be understood as a distinct mode of expressing mission theology.
