1960~1970년대 경기도 주요 도시 흥행 자본과 극장문화 : 모빌리티 시스템과의 연관성을 중심으로

Abstract

This article delves into the cultural landscape of film screenings and viewings in major cities in Gyeonggi-do during the 1960s and 1970s, employing a mobility paradigm that encompasses the essence of movement and circulation. Its primary focus lies in exploring the interplay between major cities in Gyeonggi-do and the movie theater box office industry, the shifts in box office revenue among cities resulting from the introduction of mobility systems, as well as the distinct characteristics of the cultural landscape surrounding movie theaters, including the significance of film screening and viewing experiences. The research focuses on several specific areas for examination: Suwon City, which represents southern Gyeonggi Province; Seongnam City, a newly established urban center through the reorganization of urban space in the capital city, Seoul; and Paju City, Uijeongbu City, and Dongducheon City, which house significant U.S. military bases. The article explores how the box office industry and movie theater culture in these major cities in Gyeonggi-do developed in tandem with the spatial reorganization in Seoul and the subsequent establishment of a mobility system. In this process, the box office capital of Seoul shifted to the newly developed cities and the areas where U.S. troops were stationed. This involved active participation in the establishment and operation of movie theaters in these regions, resulting in a rapid transfer of local box office revenue from these cities to Seoul. The findings of these studies challenge the prevailing notion of a Seoul-centric film history during the 1970s, which often characterizes it as a period of industry contraction. Instead, they propose the possibility of interpreting the culture of film screenings and viewings across cities and regions through a multi-layered logic. This perspective encourages a more nuanced understanding of the interconnectedness and complexities of film culture during that era.
