Abstract
Police officers are routinely exposed to high levels of stress ranging from public demands/expectations to inherent life-threatening events. High stress exposures have a negative impact on the public as well as police officers` health and wellness. Resilience is considered to be important capacities for police officers to cope with and adapt to challenging stressful and potentially traumatic situations. Many researchers have investigated how resilience among police officers influenced their job-related attitudes. Few studies, however, have identified factors that affect officers` resilience. This study examines the extent to which participation in leisure activities contribute to police officer resilience. We estimate robust regression models using survey data from 321 police officers. The results indicated that officer`s participation in leisure activities was related to greater police officer resilience, net of individual characteristics. This suggests that leisure activity is a salient component in building and fostering police officer resilience. More attention should be paid to the antecedent of law enforcement resilience.
