Abstract

This paper is part of an auteur study examining the film aesthetics of Shimizu Hiroshi. In many of Shimizu Hiroshi's works, one can observe the use of dissolve transitions, with the most characteristic being the dissolves between shots with the same framing. This is termed ‘frame dissolve’ and is understood as one of the aesthetic elements that construct Shimizu's auteurship. The study categorizes and analyzes the form of images expressed through frame dissolves into three types: ‘disintegration and intersection of the body,’ ‘instantaneous movement of the body,’ and ‘the magic of appearance and disappearance.’ Through this process, the study considers the intersection of Shimizu's aesthetic characteristics in utilizing frame dissolves and Warburg's concept of ‘surviving images.’ The overlap between Warburg's concept of survival and Shimizu's use of frame dissolves is identified in the relationship between images and time. The focus is on how the past and present connect through images, allowing for the coexistence of times that emerge through imagery. Frame dissolves in Shimizu's films are perceived as a form that effectively reveals this survival of different times intermingling and coexisting. The study also confirms that the temporal survival expressed through this stylistic technique fundamentally reflects certain desires, wishes, or dreams of the characters within the film, enhancing the associated emotions or pathos. Shimizu's use of frame dissolves is a stylistic example of how the film medium captures and expresses the heterogeneous structure and nature of time.
