최근 OTT 환경에서는 시청 지속성을 극대화하기 위해 시리즈가 강세를 보이고 있으며 이러한 경향은 다큐멘터리 분야에도 반영되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 OTT 국내 다큐멘터리 시리즈의 서사구조를 지속형, 단편형, 복합형의 세 가지로 도출하고, 인터뷰, 재연, 시뮬레이션, 프리젠터의 형식적 요소가 몰입과 충성도를 강화하는 방식에 주목하였다. 분석 결과, 지속형 시리즈는 클리프행어 등의 연결 방식을 활용하여 극적 긴장감을 유지하는 반면, 단편형 시리즈는 개별 에피소드의 흡인력을 극대화하여 시청을 유도한다. 복합형 시리즈는 단편형과 지속형의 요소를 결합하면서도 중심 플롯과 하위 플롯의 직조를 통해 다층적인 서사 구조를 형성하는 특성을 보였다. 형식적 측면에서 인터뷰와 재연은 영화적 미장센과 고사양 제작 기법을 적극 활용하여 시각적 매혹을 강화하는 역할을, 시뮬레이션은 허구와 실제를 충돌시켜 현실감을 강화하는 역할을 보이고 있다. 프리젠터는 기존 다큐멘터리의 해설적 기능에서 벗어나 상호작용성과 서사적 개입을 확대하는 방향으로 변화하고 있다. 그러나 OTT 다큐멘터리 시리즈의 이러한 극화의 경향이 다큐멘터리의 본질적 속성인 현실 재현과 그에 따른 윤리적 책무의 측면에서 문제를 야기할 가능성도 존재한다. 따라서 이러한 전략이 단순한 오락적 요소를 넘어, 현실 감각을 강화하는 방식으로 기능할 때 적극적이고 능동적인 시청행위를 가능하게 하고 새로운 다큐멘터리 미학을 모색할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
In the current OTT landscape, series have gained prominence as a strategy to maximize viewer retention. It is founded that the trend has extended to the documentary genre. This study categorizes the narrative structures of OTT Korean documentary series into three types-serial, episodic, and hybrid-and examines how formal elements such as interviews, reenactments, simulations, and presenters enhance viewer engagement and loyalty. The analysis reveals that the serial mode employs cliffhangers and other connective devices to sustain dramatic tension, whereas the episodic mode maximizes the appeal of individual episodes to encourage continued viewing. the hybrid mode integrates elements of both types while constructing a multilayered narrative through the interplay of main and subordinate plots. From a formal perspective, interviews and reenactments leverage cinematic mise-en-scene and high-production aesthetics to heighten visual appeal, while simulations juxtapose fiction and reality to reinforce a sense of authenticity. Presenters, moving beyond a purely expository role, increasingly facilitate interactivity and narrative involvement. However, the dramatization prevalent in OTT documentary series raises concerns regarding the fundamental documentary principles of reality representation and ethical responsibility. When these strategies extend beyond entertainment value to reinforce a sense of reality, they can foster more engaged and active viewership while also contributing to the evolution of documentary aesthetics.
