Abstract
This paper examines how carnivalesque expressions manifest in the Korean division film <6/45> Focusing on its narrative strategies, character portrayal, and cultural significance based on Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of carnivalesque. The study first explores the role of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) as a unique spatial setting, defining it as both a symbol of national division and an interactional space free from hierarchical structures. It further analyzes key narrative symbols such as the lottery ticket, shoe polishing, and food sharing, discussing how these elements transcend division and construct cultural imagery of reconciliation. Additionally, this paper examines how humor and grotesque elements subvert traditional division film narratives, mitigate inter-Korean hostilities, and present the possibility of cooperation and reconciliation through comedic expressions. The study also investigates carnivalesque characteristics in verbal and nonverbal communication, analyzing how polyphonic dialogue, bodily gestures, and facial expressions function as emotional bridges across cultural boundaries. The findings indicate that <6/45> employs carnivalesque narrative strategies to transform division narratives into entertainment and emotional engagement. This approach not only innovates the representational methods of division films but also deepens the cultural significance of inter-Korean relations through individual interactions. Furthermore, this study highlights the film’s narrative and cultural contributions while expanding the applicability of Bakhtin’s carnivalesque theory in the study of Korean division cinema.
