Abstract

From 2015 to 2024, South Korean politics underwent significant transformation as ideological conflicts between conservative and progressive factions spread throughout society, including the nation’s film industry. Events such as the cultural blacklist revealed during the Park Geun-hye government corruption scandal, controversies over the screening of The Diving Bell (Lee Sang-ho, 2014) at the Busan International Film Festival, and debates about Ode to My Father (Yoon Jae-kyun, 2014) made film an active site of political discourse. Both conservative and progressive political groups expressed their ideological positions through newspaper editorials discussing these films. Paradoxically, this phenomenon shows that film is not one of the cultural and artistic genre but a medium that actively engages with Korean society. This study analyzes conservative and progressive newspaper editorials published between 2015 and 2024 in South Korea using text mining techniques. The findings show that both ideological blocs focused their editorial discourse on specific films and film industry issues aligned with their political agendas. Conservatives most frequently used words such as “North Korea,” “the United States,” “China,” “nuclear power,” and “our country,” while progressives more often employed “culture,” “director,” “film festival,” “art,” and “freedom.” The keyword co-occurrence analysis revealed that conservative newspapers emphasized topics like nuclear energy policy, international relations, and political criticism, whereas progressive newspapers highlighted issues such as sexual slavery victims for the Japanese imperial army, the Busan International Film Festival crisis, and political critique. Based on this, over the past decade, political discourse in Korea has seen both conservatives and progressives projecting their political tendencies onto film discourse, resulting in a diversity of perspectives within film discourse. However, at times, films have been discussed from a uniform and fragmentary perspective, and despite controversies over the facts, there has been a risk of repeated references aimed at advancing specific political claims.
