Abstract

In the midst of growing interest in polarization in social sciences, recent studies have focused on ideological polarization among Korean National Assembly members, especially with a particular emphasis on foreign policy issues. This article argues that extant studies have limitations in terms of manifestations, measurement, and survey questions structures and response structures. Extant studies mostly concern only with a few dimensions of polarization like ideological distance between parties and bimodal distribution. In addition, extant studies have problems in analyzing survey data in terms of inconsistency of question structure and unbalanced and disproportionate response scale. This article applies more diverse measurement dimensions of polarization like alignment of within parties and overlap areas between parties. Also, this paper analyzes only three consistent survey questions(aid to North Korea, Foreign policy with regard to Korea-US relation, and National Security Law) for the sake of better measurement of survey data, This article’s finding state that (1)increase of ideological distance has not been quite consistent in the 16th-20th National Assembly and the distance in foreign policy is not bigger than other policy areas, economic and social issues. (2)Idoelogical alignment within parties have slightly increased among liberal party members of National Assembly. (3)Polarization as a bimodal distribution only happened in the 16th and 19th National Assembly. (4)The most remarkable manifestation of polarization is the decreasing overlap between parties, in other words, the so called, shrinking middle in foreign policy issues.
