Abstract
This study empirically investigates how U.S. presidential transitions influence the Korean stock market, with a particular focus on sector-level returns through time-series regression analysis. As the U.S. holds significant global economic influence, political regime changes there can ripple across international markets—especially in countries like South Korea that are highly exposed to external shocks. The analysis covers U.S. presidential transitions from 1992 to 2020 and measures the effect on sectoral returns in the KOSPI index. Key variables include the political party of the president (Democratic/Republican), regime change, policy continuity, and the immediate post-election period. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) models were applied to assess how each sector responded. Findings show that while market-wide impacts were limited, certain industries exhibited significant return shifts following U.S. regime changes, particularly in policy-sensitive sectors. These results suggest that U.S. political events affect Korean industries differently depending on perceived risks and expectations. The study offers implications for investors forming sectoral strategies amid global political uncertainty.
