Abstract
This essay is to illuminate the historical character of Jeju Island in the East Asian maritime environment, especially focusing the historical character of “Paradise Island of Jeju” probably which has been made by the hundred years of amalgamation of the Mongolian resources of human power and pastoral culture with the native human and natural environment of the Jeju island. But through the long rebellions of Barbarian Shepherds(1356~1374) happened in the era of Yuan-Ming interregnum, all this image or the character made changed. The suppression of the rebellion by the Koryo government is sometimes evaluated as an inheritance dispute of Mongol legacy, but this does not seem to represent all the truth of the event. Actually nobody can disregard the Mongol legacy. The man who first penetrated into the maritime importance of Jeju Island in East Asia and gave it an economical ground was Khubilai. But we should not disregard the historical legacy of Koryo dynasty either whose relation with Jeju was much longer than Mongol. And the last and not least is the story of Jeju people themselves which is usually omitted in official history. This paper is to describe the historical character of Jeju Island in the Yuan-Ming interregnum era in the point of maritime history. The historical change is, to sum up, the closure of the Yellow Sea and the reinforce of tributary order. Through this conclusion I would like to remark that in this East Asian politico-maritime environment one can hardly sustain the concept of ‘East Asia Mediterranean.’
