이 글은 「배비장전」이 조선조 한글소설 중에서 유일하게 제주도를 주무대로펼쳐진 소설임에 주목하여, 작품 속에서 제주도의 무엇이 어떻게 나타나고 있는지 구체적으로 살펴본 것이다. 그 결과 제주에 대한 당대인의 인식, 험한 제주 뱃길의 양상, 제주의 아름다운 풍광 묘사, 목사의 행차와 관가 주변의 모습, 경래관(京來官)의 수탈과 제주인의 곤궁한 삶의 양상 등을 읽어낼 수 있었다. 이 연구를 통해 「배비장전」 속의 제주도라는 공간은 상투적으로 막연히 제시된추상적인 공간이 아니었음이 확인되었다. 작품 속의 여러 상황과 지명․건축물등에서 나름대로 리얼리티가 확보되어 있다는 것이다. 결국 고소설의 경우도지역의 눈으로 읽으면 얼마든지 새롭게 해석될 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
With focus on the fact that, among novels written in the Korean language during the Josun period, Baebijangjun is the only one whose main setting is Jeju Island, this piece explores in detail what and how it depicts. As a result, it gives a clear picture of Jeju Island: the contemporary conception of Jeju Island, rough waterway conditions, accounts of Jeju's beautiful scenary, the picture of Governor's visits, the picture around Governor's office, the exploitation of officials from the mainland, and Jeju people in dire situation. This study reveals that in Baebijangjun, Jeju Island is not an abstract space. It secured reality through a variety of situations, place names, and structures. Finally, this study shows that also in the case of ancient novels, fresh and original interpretation can be drawn by reading with regional eyes.
