Abstract
This paper reviews the past and the presence of Micronesia which is a subregion of Oceania, comprising thousands of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean. This area was to come under European domination quite early. The Mariana Islands and the Caroline Islands were colonized by the Spanish and these territories were part of the Spanish East Indies and governed from the Spanish Philippines from the early 17th century until 1898. In the later 19th century the area would be divided between the U.S., England and Germany. The United States took control of Guam following the Spanish-American War of 1898 and colonized Wake Island. Germany took Nauru from England in 1888 and bought Palau, Caroline and Northern Mariana Islands from Spain in 1899. This area, Nauru in 1888 and Marshall Islands in 1885 belonged to ‘German New Guinea’ (Deutsch-Neuguinea, 1884-1919). The British Empire took the Gilbert Islands (Kiribati). Germany's Pacific Island territories were taken from it during the First World War and became League of Nations Mandates. Nauru was administered by Australia, England and New Zealand in 1920, while Germany's other territories in Micronesia were given as a mandate to Japan in 1919 and were colonized in the name of the ‘South Pacific Mandate’. After Japan's defeat in the Second World War its mandate became a United Nations Trusteeship in 1947 ruled by the United States, the ‘Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands’. Today, most islands of Micronesia consist of independent states, with the exceptions of Guam, Wake Island and the Northern Mariana Islands, which are U.S. territories. The United States is the only country still influencing the area of Micronesia because these independent small countries also have treaties with the U.S. for their national securities and economic support.
