Abstract
This study attempts to identify and compare some implications to moral education between Aristotle and Kant. The results of this study may be summarized into the following: (ⅰ) the justification of moral life or deed: Aristotle's justification may be defined as teleological in which happiness as the ultimate end of human beings consists of morality and intellect. Whereas Kant's justification may be defined as intrinsic in which morality is the highest value human beings ought to pursue by their own duty. (ⅱ) the nature and realms of moral education: In Aristotle, morality or virtue consists in the integration of conduct, emotion and practical wisdom, so the nature of moral education is holistic or ubiquitous. Whereas in Kant, morality consists in the motive to right action, i. e. good will, and consists of the developmental combination of right action rules and universal moral principles, so a part of moral education is intellectual. (ⅲ) the key concepts and their implications to moral education: In Aristotle, both the habituation of good conduct and the development of practical wisdom are critical of cultivating virtues which implies the control of desire. In Kant, the discipline of right actions is assumed to be the necessary step to proceed for morality which implies ascetic or stoic in essence. Moral person may reflect and justify his/her own action rules with recourse to universal moral principles by his/her practical reason. However, Aristotle and Kant seem to have something in common with the priority of doing rather than knowing in morality, the emphasis of character formation in moral education, and good habit as the required step or primary basis of moral development.
