도덕교육은 학생들이 이미 파악하고 있거나 쉽게 파악할 수 있는 ‘행위에 관한 보편적인 지식, 곧 <사실>에 관한 지식을 설명하고, 그 지식을 특정한 상황에 정당화시키는 그 <이유>를 숙고를 통해 이해할 수 있게 하는 교육이어야 한다. 이런 교육은 덕스러운 행위들의 습관화를 통해 이루어질 수 있다. 선한 사람은 옳은 인식이나 판단을 가진 사람이라기보다는 옳은 행위를 실행하는 사람이다. 옳은 행위 하기가 선한 사람을 만들어나간다는 주장이다. 행위의 옳음에 대한 앎이 아니라 옳은 행위를 실행하기가 인격 형성의 실제적인 토대이다. 그래서 선한 사람이 됨은 옳은 행위들의 반복적인 실행, 곧 습관화를 토대로 이루어진다는 것이다. 도덕교육을 통해 덕스러운 사람이 될 가능성이 많은 사람은 무엇이 고상한 것인지를 배웠고, 고상한 것을 즐기고 사랑하게 된 사람이다. 고상하고 선한 것들을 획득하는 것 또한 즐거운 행위들의 실행에 의해 가능한 것이다. 그러나 덕스러운 행위들은 학생들은 고사하고 심지어 덕스러운 사람에게도 전적으로 즐거운 것은 아니기 때문에 많은 사람들에게 괴로움 때문에 도덕적 진전이 이루어진다는 것이다.
Abstract
The moral education should be an education in which the universal knowledge about the virtuous acts, namely the knowledge about the fact(=the that) can be discussed, and the because to justify the knowledge can be understood through the serious deliberations. This education can be made up of the habituations of the virtuous acts. The good person can not be a person with the right understanding and judgment, but be a person to put the right actions into practice. This is the argument that the right actions can make good persons. Therefore, the formation of character is really based on acting the right actions, not on knowing the rightness of actions. Hence becoming a good or virtuous person is based on repeatedly acting the right and good actions, namely habituation of virtuous acts. And the moral personality development is possible by means of the pleasures in the virtuous actions and the pians in the vicious actions.
