Abstract
While large attention has recently been paid on platform workers, there has been little research on cultural laborers working for exhibition platform. This paper analyzed their labor process through qualitative research of eight webtoonists. Webtoon creation has the attributes of the play, and webtoonists are free to regulate their working time and place and do not engage in employment contracts with platforms. In addition, they also do unpaid labor for platforms at every stage of creative labor process. Therefore, it can be said that they perform free labor. Not only that, they are also economically and technically subjected to and controlled by platforms. Thus, the concept of free labor can only partially explain webtoonists’ labor process. In the discussion, the policies to guarantee the working rights of exhibition platform’s creators including webtoonists are suggested.
