Abstract
In late capitalist societies, the number of freelance workers—those engaged in non-standard employment relations—has significantly increased. In particular, freelance workers play a crucial role in the media industry, where content is produced on a project basis, such as in broadcasting and music. This study explores the actual labor processes of of freelance workers in South Korea’s media industry and, by linking them to the characteristics of the media labor market and creative labor, reveals that their vulnerability does not stem solely from the absence of legal employment relationships. Through in-depth interviews with eight freelance media workers, our study shows that their labor, which is often regarded as autonomous and creative, is in fact highly constrained and vulnerable to the logic of capital. Although not subordinated to a specific corporation, freelance workers in the media industry are highly subordinated to personal networks. Building on these findings, this study critically examines existing discourses that portray creative workers as autonomous laboring subjects. Furthermore, it argues for the need to institutionally address the relational vulnerability and network subordination that render freelance workers precarious.
