본 연구에서는 최근 10년 동안 대학을 졸업하고 최초 직장에서 임금근로자로 종사한 30세 이하 청년층 표본(대졸자직업이동경로조사: GOMS)을 대상으로 성별 임금격차 추세와 원인을 실증분석하였다. 최근 2012년도 이후 대학을 졸업한 청년층이 노동시장에서 획득하는 월 임금수준에서의 성별 임금격차는 꾸준히 감소한 것으로 나타났으며, 특히 정규근로시간과 초과근로시간을 통제하여 추정한 시간당 임금수준에서의 성별 임금격차는 현저히 감소하였다. 2016년도에 이르기까지 성별 임금격차는 시간당 임금수준을 기준으로 10% 수준을 넘어서고 있었으나 2019년도 자료에서는 6% 수준으로 급감하였다. 임금방정식 추정 실증분석 모델에서 설명변수로 나이만을 추가했을 경우, 성별 임금격차는 통계적으로 무의미한 수준으로 변하였고 그 추정계수값들의 부호도 오히려 양(+)의 값으로 전환되었다. 최근 청년층 노동시장에서 발견되는 성별 임금격차의 주된 원인은 남성 청년층의 군복무 기간에서 발생한 연령의 차이에 기인한다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study empirically estimates the trends and reasons of gender earnings gap found by recent cohort of college graduates in the first workplace after their college education. Using the data of Graduate Occupational Mobility Survey(GOMS), we consider the several characteristics on determining young workers’ wage determination in the labor market. The empirical results indicate that the degree of gender earnings gap has become narrowed down in the recent cohorts and the gap seems to disappear after considering the age effect on the wage determination. The possible explanation for this phenomenon is that the time of military service for young males might have been compensated in the labor market possibly through the wage tenure system.
