Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore chronically the name places of the sea between Korea and Japan described in the Japanese old maps. The results of this study are as follows. Firstly, the name place of the North Sea had been used until the early 20th century. Although the North Sea had been frequently appeared in old documents, it had been rarely used in old maps. Secondly, name places such as Sea of Japan, Inland Sea of Japan, Sea of Korea, etc. had been described as the name place of East Sea area in Japanese old maps since the late 18th century under the influence of western old maps. Thirdly, Sea of Korea was described as the official name place of East Sea area in the old map published by the Japanese government in the early 19th century. Fourthly, the Japanese government revised the old map in the middle 19th century and officially adopted Sea of Japan as the name place of East Sea area. This led the name place of Sea of Japan to be disseminated rapidly into Japanese old maps, but such name place was not settled because maps with descriptions of both Sea of Korea and Sea of Japan and without name places of the sea had been observed. Success in the Russo-Japanese War led to use the name place of Sea of Japan widely in Japan.
