Abstract

This study aims to analyze how pre-service elementary teachers understand volcanic landform formation and how the concept of geological time is applied in their reasoning processes. The research was conducted with 28 pre-service elementary teachers enrolled in the Department of Science Education at P University of Education, located in metropolitan B. None of the participants had received formal instruction on volcano-related topics prior to the study. Data were collected using three tools. First, a multiple-choice test consisting of five items was developed based on the core concepts from the 2015 revised national science curriculum to assess participants’ understanding of geological concepts related to volcano formation. Second, participants were shown satellite images of two volcanoes—Parícutin in Mexico, which formed over a short period, and Mauna Loa in Hawaii, which developed over an extended geological timespan. Participants were asked to identify which volcano had taken longer to form and provide a rationale. Third, an open-ended writing task was administered, prompting participants to explain the formation of a volcano, including temporal expressions references to geological time. Based on their reasoning regarding geological time, participants were categorized into two clusters: the Chronological Reasoning Group and the Non-scientific Reasoning Group. A Semantic network analysis and topic modeling were conducted for each cluster’s responses. The Chronological Reasoning Group recognized geological changes such as erosion, weathering, cooling, and repetition over time, constructing explanations grounded in scientific indicators. In contrast, the Non-scientific Reasoning Group relied on intuitive impressions, such as color, size, and general appearance of volcanoes. A Mann-Whitney U test was conducted to compare the understanding of geological concepts between the two clusters, revealing that the Chronological Reasoning Group scored significantly higher in concept comprehension statistically (p = .004). Furthermore, analysis of the centrality and connectivity of temporal nodes in each group’s language network showed that the Chronological Reasoning Group linked the concept of time with a broader range of geological processes, whereas the Non-scientific Reasoning Group exhibited minimal and restricted connections, mostly limited to the concept of "formation." These findings highlight the essential role of temporal reasoning in the understanding of geological concepts and underscore the importance of targeted instructional design for developing students’ conceptualization of geological time.
