Abstract
This study examined the effectiveness of a discussion- and debate-based climate change education program in enhancing elementary students’ climate literacy and critical thinking. The program was implemented over 12 sessions across four weeks with 36 fourth-grade students at an elementary school in P Metropolitan City in October 2024. The experimental group participated in discussion- and debate-based lessons, while the control group received traditional lecture-based instruction. Pre- and post-tests measuring climate literacy and critical thinking were administered, and independent samples t-tests were conducted using SPSS 28. Results indicated statistically significant improvements in all subdomains of climate literacy—knowledge, awareness, and behavior—in the experimental group. Additionally, critical thinking skills and dispositions showed meaningful gains, particularly in distinguishing fact from opinion, identifying credible sources, detecting bias, inquisitiveness, and objectivity. Post-program surveys revealed high levels of student interest, engagement, comprehension, and perceived value. These findings suggest that discussion- and debate-based instruction is an effective pedagogical approach for promoting student-centered inquiry, collaborative communication, and the development of climate literacy and critical thinking. Implications include the need to expand such programs across different grade levels and school settings, as well as to explore long-term impacts on climate-related behaviors through sustained follow-up activities.
