제목의 수용미학적 작용에 대해 철학자 아서 단토(Arthur Danto)는 자신의 저서 『일상적인 것의 변용 Transfiguration of commonplace』(1985)에서 제목을 “해석을 위한 길라잡이(a direction for interpretation)”로 설명하였고, 마르셀 뒤샹(Marcel Duchamp)은 제목을 “보이지 않는 색(invisible color)”으로 규정한 바 있다.

Abstract

The subject of this paper is ‘title of art works and its art historical development’. As Marcel Duchamp likened titles of his own works to a metaphorical term of “invisible colors”, titles have an decisive effect on visual perception of beholders. Linguistically, titles are a proper noun of art works it refers to. As proper noun titles perform ‘identification’ and ‘distinction’ as it’s primary functions. Titles enable us to refer to a specific work and distinguish it from other works. Titles are in any case more than a neutral designator. As Arthur Danto observed in The Transfiguration of the Commonplace(1981), titles provide “a direction for interpretation” between art works and beholders. This research inquires into the theoretical characteristics of titles, their origin and development in western art history. In the Middle Ages, for example, most of art works were created in religious context. Representing religious messages they had their own location in the sacred space. There was no necessity to call them by individual name. After separated from their original context and disposed to the exhibition space, art works were exhibited together with other works in a space. It is one of important triggers to necessity of naming for every single art works. This study aims to trace the lineage of titles and to determine the social conditions which caused the necessity of naming for the art works.
