Abstract
Danto was in a privileged position insofar as thinking critically about essential property in contemporary art is concerned. A great deal of the art being made in Danto’s early years, especially “Nietzsche as Philosopher” aimed to rattle the cage of traditional theory of philosophies and art, and cried out for rethinking of ‘aboutness’ and ‘embodied meaning’ as the essential property of artworks. Therefore we have to consider the definition of art in Danto’s argument related Nietzsche’s perspectivism. Art, in regard with Danto’s posthistorical art world theory, has become philosophical, yet it is difficult to find appropriate explanation of the intention and the style problem still lack theoretical ground. In this paper examines Danto’s account of artwork and expression in light of the role the artistic metaphor plays in the interpretation of the artwork, we look to metaphorical representation in Danto’s definition of art. And, finally we argue Danto’s account has a further virtue about the truth of art. We expect that it is defined within Danto’s theory might be useful to explain contemporary artworks’ essence for us.
