Abstract
This paper examines the art-historical context in which titles emerged in early Modernism and developed in various ways. Titles appeared alongside Modernism. Before Modernism, there was neither a recognized necessity for titles nor an awareness of their significance. The names given to artworks in that era were, strictly speaking, not titles but rather designations that functioned as such. As Modernism departed from academic artistic conventions and engaged in various experimental practices, a cognitive gap emerged between the visually manifested elements in an artwork and the artist's original creative intent. To bridge this gap, artists consciously and deliberately began to assign titles to their works. With the advent of Modernism, titles assumed the role of a messenger, conveying the artist's original intent to the viewer. As aesthetic orientations diversified and expressive approaches became increasingly individualized, the process of titling artworks also grew more complex. This study aims to shed light on this context by analyzing the titles of works by key artists who played a pioneering role in the art-historical development of titles, examining the relationship between the conceptual evolution of art and its titles.
