본 연구는 동시대 미술관에서의 큐레이팅 실천과 그 교육적 역할을 조명하는 것을 목표로 한다. 2018년 국립현대미술관에서 개최된 국제 심포지엄 〈미술관은 무엇을 연구하는가〉는 글로벌 미술관들이 직면한 변화 속에서 뮤지엄의 역할이 단순한 작품 보존과 전시를 넘어서는 지점을 탐색했다. 특히, 큐레이팅 개념이 ‘큐레 토리얼(the curatorial)’이라는 확장된 형태로 논의되면서, 뮤지엄이 고정된 공간적·제도적 틀을 넘어 담론적· 교육적 실천의 장으로 변화하는 과정이 강조되었다. 본 연구는 이러한 논의를 바탕으로, 큐레이팅의 변화를 역 사적으로 검토하고, 뮤지엄의 교육적 임무와 역할이 큐레토리얼 실천과 어떻게 연결되는지를 분석한다. 특히, 담론적 전환(discursive turn) 이후 전시 외 프로그램(출판, 심포지엄, 워크숍 등)으로 확장된 큐레이팅과 그 의미를 주요 사례를 중심으로 살펴본다. 그리고 이와 같은 큐레토리얼 논의가 뮤지엄 전시에 대한 반성으로 이 어진 것을 확인한다. 뮤지엄은 이제 단순히 물질 문화의 보존과 전시를 넘어 참여, 과정, 사유의 장으로서의 역할을 수행해야 할 임무를 떠안는다. 본 연구는 미술관의 교육적 임무와 역할을 큐레이팅 실천을 중심으로 재 조명하며, 그동안 국내에서 드물게 논의되어 온 큐레토리얼 스터디(curatorial studies)와 뮤지올로지 (museology) 간의 연계를 모색한다. 나아가 전시 외 다양한 형식을 포함하는 큐레이팅에 관한 담론이 뮤지엄 의 실천영역에서도 활성화되어, 뮤지엄이 동시대 시민 사회의 문제점을 공유하고 시각문화를 재구성하는 공론 장으로서의 기능을 다할 것을 기대해 본다.
Abstract
This study aims to shed light on curatorial practices in contemporary museums. The 2018 interna- tional symposium "How Do Museums Research" held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), explored how the role of museums extends beyond the preserva- tion and display of artworks amid global institutional transformations. In particular, as the concept of curating has been increasingly discussed in its expanded form as the curatorial, the serial symposia and its publication highlighted how museums are evolving beyond fixed spatial and institutional frameworks to become sites of discursive and educational practice. Building on these discussions, this study examines the historical shifts in curatorial practice and analyzes how the educational mission and role of museums are connected to curatorial practice. Focusing on the expansion of non-ex- hibition-based programs—such as publications, symposia, and workshops—after the "Discursive Turn,“ it further explores the potential intersections between Curatorial Studies and Museology. Through this exploration, the study aims to contribute to rethinking the educational role of contemporary mu- seums and proposing new directions for curatorial practices.
