현대 조각에서 메달과 주화 형태를 차용한 톤도(tondo) 부조의 예술성에 관한 연구 – 기념비의 일상화를 중심으로-

본 연구의 목적은 기념메달이나 주화처럼 현대인의 일상품이 오랜 역사를 지닌 미술작품의 형태를 지니고 있으며, 이들 형태의 근원이 되는 톤도(tondo) 포맷이 현대미술에서 부조의 형식을 통해 조형성과 의미를 강조하는 하나의 예술형태가 된다는 점을 규명하고 이를 미술의 창작에 적극 활용할 수 있는 소재로 활용할 수 있는 요소들을 밝히는 것이다. 이는 특히 역사적 사건이나 국제적 이벤트를 기념하는 기념비적 속성을 지닌 메달과 기념주화의 톤도 형식 안에서 일상적 주제를 다룸으로써 현대미술의 주요 전략 중 하나인 포스트프로덕션을 실천하는 장을 열어주며, 현대사회에 범람하는 이미지를 각자의 작품으로 흡수하고 새로운 표현의 소재로 사용할 수 있다는 점을 예술론적 관점에서 다룬다. 특히 현대미술의 감상과 제작에 있어서 매순간이 현대인에게는 과거의 기준과는 다른 의미에서 기념비적인 것이며, 생활 주변에서 언제든지 발견할 수 있는 일상의 이미지들을 통해 가능하다는 점이 톤도 형식을 차용한 부조의 예술성을 담보해준다.
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to determine that contemporary commonplace such as commemorative medals or coins have the long-lived forms of art works, and that their origin format, tondo, can be revitalized as an artistic form in contemporary art, in order to disclose its artistic elements for art educational use in particular. For this, this essay deals with the art theoretical viewpoint that overflowing contemporary images can be transfigured as new material for the expressions in art education, by opening an arena for the practice of post-production, a significant strategy of contemporary art with the theme of ‘everydayness’ through the tondo format of monumental medals or coins. Particularly, the art educational point is suggested that each moment is monumental for the contemporaries in the appreciation and manufacturing of contemporary art works, and that it is possible when we pay attention to the images easily found around us in daily life.
