Abstract

This paper identifies objects in the researcher's multimedia installation as a medium for conveying place memory and narrative, in that objects in contemporary Aboriginal Australian art use ‘Dreaming’ to convey the place and story of the object's existence. When certain objects in Aboriginal Australian ‘Dreaming’ are reinterpreted in contemporary Aboriginal art, I argue that the objects reveal place memory and narrative symbolism through the mediation of ‘Dreaming’. To this end, Chapter II compares the historical background of Aboriginal Australia, the concept of ‘Dreaming’, and the work of contemporary Aboriginal artists, where formal shifts from early Aboriginal art can be seen. Chapter II explores the work of Tjampitjinpa, whose art marks the transition of Aboriginal art from narrative painting to the abstraction of contemporary art, while Chapter III explores the relationship between objects linked by ‘Dreaming’ to reveal their identity and the places where their ancestors lived in an installation by a young Aboriginal artist. Chapter IV examines the role of objects as actors in the expression of place memory through interactive technology in the researcher's 2022 exhibition of multimedia installations, <Salad Bowl>, and compares it to the work of the previous artists. This study examines objects in terms of symbolizing the narrative of the work, and in installation art, which is a space of experience, place memory is expressed through the relationship between a specific object and the viewer through technology, and in the future, I would like to expand the possibility of mutual networks between humans as viewers and non-humans as objects in interactive art.
