Abstract
Quantum mechanics invites us to understand reality not as a fixed, singular state, but as a multidimensional condition constituted through entanglement and superposition. This indeterministic and probabilistic mode of thought has had a profound influence on the expressive strategies of contemporary art, opening a new aesthetic horizon in which the languages of physics and art converge to form a shared worldview. Leading Korean contemporary abstract artists have actively explored the artistic potential of quantum thinking by addressing themes such as the origins of nature and life, and the interaction between order and disorder. In particular, post-Dansaekhwa artists such as Lee Kangwook, Park Jisook, and Kwon Hyunjin have visualized “quantum-strange patterns” through their own distinctive painterly vocabularies, emerging as notable examples of aesthetic practices that develop both complex systems thinking and quantum-mechanical concepts. Their works construct compositional structures in which geometric order and randomness interact, sensuously rendering the quantum vitality of nature and the probabilistic emergence of life, while visualizing the diverse ontological and metaphysical modalities embodied in what may be termed “quantum abstraction.” Accordingly, this study proposes the concept of Quantum Abstraction and presents a preliminary theoretical inquiry, aiming to examine the aesthetic distinctiveness and interpretive scope embedded in the dominant trajectories of 21st-century Korean abstract painting.
