Abstract

This study aims to analyze the formal characteristic of the ‘Heads,’ a series of busts by the 18th-century sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, also known as ‘Character Heads’, and to reveal that ‘Heads’ possess the conditions of pioneering characteristics of modern sculpture. This study begins with the question of why Messerschmidt’s busts, which are full of modern characteristics, are not mentioned in the context of the history of modern sculpture. Therefore, this study first examines the points overlooked by past methodologies for interpreting ‘Heads’, thereby removing the distorted perspectives that were overlaid on ‘Heads’ work as a project personally carried out by Messerschmidt. The study then analyzes the formal characteristics revealed in two of the ‘Heads’ and compares them with the modern qualities that Rosalind Krauss identified in her analysis of the <Balzac>. This paper argues that Messerschmidt’s ‘Heads’ are not the result of mental illness, but rather the outcome of the artist’s extraordinary passion and research for artistic achievement.
