본 연구는 아티스트 콜렉티브 루앙루파가 기획한 ‘카셀 도큐멘타 15 (Kassel Documenta 15)’의 핵심인 룸붕(Lumbung) 시스템을 선물경제의 관점에서 분석함으로써, 기존 미술 제도와 차별화되는 이들의 독자적인 예술 실천을 살펴보고 그 가치와 의의를 규명한다. 도큐멘타 15 참여자들은 서구 중심적이고 경제·문화 자본의 편중이 심한 기존 초대형 국제 전시의 한계를 극복하고자, 지식, 자본, 아이디어, 재화 등 모든 유·무형 자원의 공유를 가능하게 하는 독자적 ‘룸붕 공유 시스템’을 마련하였다. 이 시스템은 과정적 교류를 기반으로 ‘룸붕 워킹 그룹’이라는 대안적 경제 네트워크로 조직화되었으며, 나아가 카셀 도시 전역에서 예술적 실천으로 구체화되었다. 본 연구는 도큐멘타 15의 기획 및 워킹 그룹의 실천 과정을 면밀히 검토하고, 이 과정에서 드러나는 룸붕 시스템을 공동체 지향의 선물경제의 틀에서 해석한다. 이런 개념화를 통해 바라본 도큐멘타 15에서 설계된 룸붕 시스템은 기존 사회참여미술이 지닌 자기참조성과 일시적 이벤트성의 한계를 넘어, 사회 속에서 지속 가능한 관계망과 공동체적 교환 구조를 실현하고자 한 대안적 실천이었음을 주장한다.
Abstract
This study examines the Lumbung system, the core of Kassel Documenta 15 organized by the artist collective ruangrupa, through the perspective of the gift economy. It explores how their practice differs from conventional art institutions and clarifies its social and artistic implications. The participants of Documenta 15 established an independent Lumbung sharing system to overcome the Western-centered, capital-driven structure of large-scale exhibitions, enabling the exchange of both tangible and intangible resources such as knowledge, capital, and ideas. Based on process-oriented collaboration, this system was developed into an alternative economic network, the Lumbung Working Group, and materialized across the city of Kassel. Through this framework, the Lumbung system demonstrates an alternative mode of practice that transcends the self-referential and event-based limitations of socially engaged art, realizing sustainable networks of relationships and community-based structures of exchange within society.
