Abstract

Horror films are characterized by experience and violation of limits, and they invite the audience into such limits. Feelings like fear, closedanger, unfamiliarity, surprise and tension are the rewards promisedby horror films to the audience that accept their invitation. However, functions of horror films are not confined to disturbing and awakeningsuch senses. Horror films have cultural politics functions of testingand exposing the effects and limits of powers and values in the disciplineof the Symbolic by presenting the others, or monster. As a general custom of the genre, most of horror films in whichfemale monsters appear expose unspeakable and latent desires of thesociety as a part of ideological function, showing unfairness and hypocrisyof the culture that requires such suppression. On a differentperspective, they aim to return to the previous status by killing themonsters and to repeat such suppression. On the contrary, the film<Antichrist> partially adopts the custom of horror genre and shows alarge different in that it shows different cultural politics than otherhorror films in which female monsters appear by removing the existingview on femininity and experimenting a new understanding on it. This study examined the film <Antichrist> while especially focusingon the fact that the film recognizes 'female' and 'nature' as beingidentical and maternal love is an important factor in comprehendingthis film. In conclusion, although the film appears to focus on describingextremely violent and brutal femininity, this study interpreted<Antichrist> as a text that supports liberation of women in resistanceto suppressive discourses against women, demonstrating that<Antichrist> shows ambivalent properties of 'birth' and 'death' inwomen similar to nature.
