본고는 가부장적 역사학의 편향성으로 인해 배제된 여성의 역사를 기록하기 위한 목적으로 다인종 국가인 미국 사회의 통합에 기여한 코리안 아메리칸 안수산의 삶을 젠더, 인종, 트랜스내셔날리즘적 정체성의 관점에서 조명하였다. 미국 최초의 한국인 이민자 부부 도산 안창호와 이혜련 여사의 장녀로 태어난 안수산은 제2차 세계대전 당시 미 해군에 입대하여 아시아계 여성 최초의 해군 장교, 미국 여성 최초의 포격술 장교, 전역 후 국가안전보장국(NSA)에서 암호분석가로 활동, 그리고 은퇴 이후에는 미국 내 한인공동체를 위해 헌신했다. 안수산은 젠더적 편견과 인종차별이 만연했던 20세기 미국 사회에서 주체적인 선택으로 삶을 개척한 개척자이자 미국과 한국에 대한 중첩된 애국심을 가졌던 인물로 기억되어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to study Susan Ahn Cuddy's life as a part of the process of creating a history of excluded women. Although Cuddy is a Korean-American who has left a significant legacy in ethnic minority communities in the United States, her life has not been illuminated in a balanced perspective. Cuddy, who was the daughter of the first Korean couple to immigrate to the United States, also uplifted the Nation through strong work ethic, an unwavering love of country, and a steadfast devotion to her life mission, even in the face of great adversity. Unfortunately, Korean society has not yet realized that Cuddy was a central figure in the history of the American minority community. In the early 20th century, when Korean-American Cuddy lived, American society was full of gender-based prejudice and racial discrimination. At that time, Cuddy was an Asian woman born in America, and second generation of immigrants. The overlapping discrimination she received for this reason suggests that her life would never have been easy, even excluding the chaotic circumstances of the time. Cuddy has overcome gender bias and racial discrimination in American society and pioneered her own life. She is also a major figure in the history of the Korean community in the United States. The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct her life from gender, ethnic, and transnationalism point of view to establish this fact objectively.
