艮齋 田愚의 충청도 중심강학 활동에 대한 연구

본 논문은 艮齋 田愚가 1878년 4월부터 1901년 8월까지 충청도를 중심으로 강학 활동을 펼친 실상과 그 특징, 그리고 그 배경을 체계적으로 규명한 것이다. 전우가 1878년 4월부터 1901년 8월까지 23년 동안 거주하며 강학한 곳은 10개 고을 14곳이며, 순회하며 강학한 곳은 16개 고을 24곳이다. 이를 합쳐 살펴보면 모두 17개 고을 37곳이다. 이를 도별로 보면 충청도가 13개 고을 30곳, 경상도가 문경과 상주 2개 고을 5곳, 경기도 죽산과 전라도 고창이 각각 1곳으로, 충청도를 중심으로 강학 활동이 전개되었음을 알 수 있다. 전우는 충청도 중에서도 湖論의 영향력이 적게 미치는 내포지역 이외의 고을에서 동문․처가․문인 등의 도움과 스승의 후광을 활용하여 강학 활동을 펼쳤다. 그 결과 충청도의 26개 고을에서 가장 많은 113명이, 전라도의 10개 고을에서 30명이, 경상도 5개 고을에서 5명이, 서울․개성․경기의 3개 고을에서 3명이, 함경도․북간도의 8개 지역에서 29명이, 평안도의 6개 고을에서 9명이, 강원도의 1개 고을에서 1명이 각각 입문하였다. 전우가 충청도를 중심으로 강학 활동을 활발히 전개한 것은 그가 任憲晦의 학통을 계승하는 과정에서 동문들 중 이탈자가 생기고 華西學派와의 갈등이 갈수록 더욱 심화되어 그가 주도하는 임헌회 학통의 문인집단이 중대한 위기를 맞았기 때문이다. 이러한 학파의 당면한 위기를 극복하기 위해 전우는 임헌회의 문집 편찬을 주도하여 동문의 결속을 굳게 다지는 한편, 강학 활동을 활발하게 전개하여 강력한 문인집단을 형성하고자 하였다. 그 결과 충청도에서 화서학파에 대항할 수 있는 문인집단을 형성할 뿐만 아니라 그 지역적 기반을 전국으로 확대해 나갈 수 있는 발판을 마련했다.
Abstract
This paper investigated the truth, characteristics and backgrounds of the educational activities of Ganjae Jeonwoo in Chungcheong Province from April 1878 to August 1901. He did the educational activities in 15 places in 10 towns while living in those towns and 22 places in 14 towns while making the rounds for 23 years from April 1878 to August 1901. The educational activities were performed in a total of 37 places in 18 towns. By province, the educational activities were carried out in 31 places in 14 towns in Chungcheong Province, 4 places in 2 towns of Mungyeong and Sangju in Gyeongsang Province, 1 town in Juksan in Gyeonggi Province and 1 town in Gochang in Jeolla province. This showed that his educational activities were developed mainly in Chungcheong Province. Jeongwoo performed the educational activities with help from the same school, in-laws and scholars and in the glory of his master in towns other than Naepo area that was less influenced by the Horon (湖論) school in Chungcheong Province. As a result, the number of people who entered his school was 113, the highest number, in 26 towns in Chungcheong Province, 30 in 10 towns in Jeolla Province, 5 in 5 towns in Gyeongsang Province, 3 in 3 towns in Seoul, Gaeseong and Gyeonggi Province, 29 in 8 towns in Hamgyeong Province and North Gando(北間島), 9 in 6 towns in Pyeongan Province and 1 in 1 town in Gangwon Province. Jeonwoo proactively performed the educational activities mainly in Chungcheong Province because the scholar group of the Lim Heon-hoe(任憲晦) scholastic mantle that was led by him faced a crisis as some scholars of his school left during his succession to the scholastic mantle of Lim Heon-hoe and the conflicts with the Hwaseo School (華西學派) increased. To overcome such crisis faced by his school, Jeonwoo intended to strengthen the solidarity of the school by taking the lead in the compilation of literary works of Lim Heon-hoe, and form a strong group of scholars by actively developing the educational activities. As a result, he established a scholar group that can confront the Hwaseo school in Chungcheong province and laid the foundations for expanding the regional base to the whole nation.
