Abstract
There were three naval bases called Sugunjin in Mokpojin, Gohadojin, and Danggotchang in Mokpo city during the period of Joseon Dynasty. Before February, 17th, 1598 (31st year of King Seonjo’s reign), Yi sun-shin had secured the naval base and provisions, and reconstructed the Joseon naval forces by building the arms and battleships. After Tongjeyoung moved to Gogeumdo, the provisions left in the old Tongjeyoung, Gohado were kept by Byeoljang. Then, the provisions in Gohado were moved to Danggot which was Danggotjin belonging to Tongjeyoung. It was called Danggot, Danggotdocheong, or danggotchang. It has been a common view that Danggotchang was moved from Gohadojin to Danggot in 1647 (25th year of King Injo’s reign). But according to 『Bibyeonsa Deungrok』 and 『Ilseongrok』, the movement was made in 1603 (36th year of King Seonjo’s reign). This study traced back the terms Danggotchang, Danggotjin, Danggotchang in Naju, and Danggotchang in Muan, and resulted that the terms, Danggotjin and Danggotchang were used in different periods. And there were also two Danggotchang’s in different periods respectively. The time when the base was closed is a little different according to historical records, but Danggotjin in Naju can be said as closing in 1830 (10th year of King Sunjo’s reign). The argument that the location of Danggotchang is in Danggadu is a mistake made by neglecting 「Map of Honam」, 『Bibyeonsain Banganjido』. Two Danggotchang’s would be located in Danggo near Jeonnam Jeil High School neighboring Yongdang and near Myeongdo Daycare Center in Hadang respectively.
