Abstract

This study aimed to introduce new harvest season data. To this end, some issues related to the 19th-century landlord system were briefly outlined, based on various information which was available during the harvest season. The trend of rent changes per land unit, and its relationship with rice price were summarized in this study. Rent per land unit continued to fluctuate widely in the short term. In the long term, rent prices showed a sagging W-type medium-term wave with a long wavelength from the late 18th century until the 40s of the 19th century. Thereafter, rent prices were generally stable until the mid-60s of the 19th century but began to decline again until the 70s. Then prices stagnated again for a long time until the end of the 19th century. The decline in rent income per land unit started from the 1860s, which has been derived from various studies conducted on the landlord system during this period, was different from that of the so-called U-type wave that occurred when rent recovered again after hitting rock bottom in the 1890s, Rice price in Daegu also surged steeply from the mid-19th century. With the base years of the 1840s, rice price revealed no correlation with rent per land unit in the first half of the 1840s, while there was some correlation in the second half of the 1840s. This could suggest that rice price was more directly related to agricultural productivity in the second half of the 19th century, compared to the first half of the 19th century; and that in the first half, the central government’s price-control policy worked well to some extent through the grain loan scheme (Hwan-gok). In the second half of the 19th century, although there was a certain correlation between rent per land unit and rice price, it is difficult to conclude that the spike in rice price during this period was caused by a decrease in productivity. These issues can only be examined more specifically after more data has been discovered.
