Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to consider ‘Frame within a frame’ which has not beenused much in Korean TV Dramas. So far, visual highlights for a specific subject andnarrative, has been expressed mainly through the close-up shot, depth of field, angle,camera movement, fast transitions, and lighting techniques in Korean TV dramas. InSBS drama <You who came from the stars> which went off the air in February usedFrame within a frame to highlight the particular scenes, instead of the conventionaltechniques mentioned above. Through the analysis of the key scenes, this studyinvestigates how Frame within a frame technique is combined with the drama’snarrative. As a result, Frame within a frame has been utilized systematically andrepeatedly within critical and intense scenes to enhance the context of this drama. Also,the dramatic scenes are visually highlighted and passed on to increase engagement ofthe viewers. The frame within a frame has been used as an emphasizing function, as wellas a foreshadowing the dramatic events. These utilizations of frame within a frame canbe the emergence of new techniques in Korean TV dramas.
