Abstract

This paper examines the possibility that the Yeongsan River, Wolchul Mountain, and Heuksan Island formed an organic connection network on the Korea-China Sea Road and formed a marine religious network with the keyword ‘Yeongsan’(meaning ‘spiritual mountain’), which was internalized as a wish for safe navigation among old seafarers traveling in and out of the sea. First, it was examined from various angles that Wolchulsan Mountain was recognized as a ‘Yeongsan’ that gave spiritual inspiration among seafarers who wished for safe navigation. And the memory of the marine religious network with the keyword of ‘Yeongsan’, which was internalized among the old seafarers, was first expressed as Yeongsan County at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, and after the 18th century, Yeongsan River appeared to begin to be called a partial name for the river, and by the end of the 19th century, it was believed that it would have been settled as Yeongsan River, which collectively refers to the entire river. Next, it was confirmed through various literature that Heuksando served as an essential stopover of the Korea-China Sea Road, and that the stopover port of Heuksando was Eupdong Port, citing the fact that significant archaeological data were identified in Eupdong Village. In addition, the relationship between Heuksando and Naju Yeongsan River, and the relationship between Heuksando and Wolchulsan Mountain were discussed from various angles. Finally, it was proposed to reset the hypothesis of the marine religious network with the keyword ‘Yeongsan’ as ‘Yeongsan's historical and cultural space’, discover various and attractive cultural contents in the historical and cultural space connecting Yeongsan River, Wolchul(Yeongsan) Mountain, and Heuksan(Yeongsan) Island, and reproduce them as a complex cultural site applied to tourism, festivals, and industries.
