내러티브에서 나타나는 등장인물의 감정 분류에 관한 연구: 기호학적 범주화를 중심으로

초록

내러티브에 나타나는 등장인물이 경험하는 감정에 관한 연구는 매우 부족한 상황이며 보다 체계적으로 연구될 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 내러티브에서 등장인물이 경험하는 감정의 구조화와 범주화를 위해 일반적이면서 보편적인 감정을 연구하고자 시도하였다. 본 연구에서는 감정을 이해하기 위한 접근 방법으로 동양과 서양의 철학적, 심리학적 논의들을 검토하고 내러티브에서 등장인물이 경험하는 감정의 분류에 관한 기호학적 범주화 연구를 진행하였다. 이를 위해 기호학적 이항 대립에 근거하여 대립적 감정을 도출한 결과 ‘기쁨’의 대립적 감정으로 ‘슬픔’, ‘분노’의 대립적 감정으로 ‘관용’, ‘공포’의 대립적 감정으로 ‘안도’, ‘사랑’의 대립적 감정으로 ‘증오’, ‘혐오’의 대립적 감정으로 ‘수용’, ‘욕망’의 대립적 감정으로 ‘무관심’, ‘놀람’의 대립적 감정으로 ‘예상’이라는 감정의 대립쌍을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 내러티브에 나타나는 등장인물의 감정에 관한 선행 연구가 매우 부족한 실정에서 감정 분류는 물론 내러티브 속 등장인물의 감정 표출에 관한 기호학적 범주화 연구를 진행하고 이것의 타당성을 확인하였다는 점에서 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다.

Abstract

Research on emotions experienced by characters appearing in narratives is scarce and requires more systematical studies. This study examined universal and general emotions in order to structure and categorize emotions experienced by characters in narratives. This study also examined philosophical and psychological discussions of the East and West in an attempt to understand emotions, and offered a discussion on the classification of emotions experienced by characters in narratives. Semiotic categorization studies were conducted. The results of deriving polar emotions based on semiotic binary opposition, such as ‘sadness’ as an inverse emotion of ‘joy’, ‘forbearance’ as opposed to ‘anger’, ‘relief’ as the inverse of ‘fear’, ‘hatred’ in opposition of ‘love’, ‘acceptance’ as opposed to ‘disgust’, ‘indifference’ as the inverse of ‘desire’, and ‘anticipation’ contrasting with ‘surprise’, we were able to confirm corresponding opposing pairs for specific emotions. Since prior studies on the emotions of characters appearing in narratives are sorely lacking, this study based its premise on the classification of emotions and the emotions of the characters within the narrative. This study’s significance dwells in the fact that the semiotic categorization of emotional expressions was conducted and its validity was confirmed.
