초록

본 논문은 19세기 프랑스 신인상주의 화가인 조르즈 쇠라(George Seurat)의 그림을 모티브로 손드하임(Sondheim)이 창작한 뮤지컬 작품 『Sunday in the Park with George』를 통해 컨셉 뮤지컬에 관한 연구를 목적으로 한다.

Abstract

This thesis aims to study the concept musical through the musical work 『Sunday in the Park with George』 created by Sondheim with the motif of the painting of the 19th century French neo-impressionist painter George Seurat. Unlike the composition of contemporary musicals, Sondheim's musicals are characterized as experimental works directed with various concepts. It is possible to perform repetitive performances in plays or operas, but just as Sondheim's concept musicals have the variability that they can create different endings at any time. A slightly different concept may be applied between the performance period and the role, and different materials may be adopted. Compared to the 1986 premiere work, the musical work (2013), which is the subject of this paper, has a different aspect of enhancing the completeness of the work through the color change of the computer graphic used. The lyrics and compositions that audibly embody pointillism are the part that best expresses the concept of this work, and depicts the dots (Dot, Georges' lover's name or dialogue during painting) and the details hung in the studio Each painting, fragments of light (lighting), etc. are connected to each other through the diary, the grandmother's legacy. As such, the conclusion that the artist's creation is completed into a genuine work can be said to be an expression of imagination that cannot be compared in musicals of the time. In the sense of pioneering a new field, the concept musical shows well the creativity it wants to convey to the audience.
