Abstract
This study examines the unique narrative role and structure of the opening sequence in Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into the Woods. The opening sequence consists of nine independent yet inter- woven segments that intricately reveal each character’s desires and motivations, thereby establishing the overall themes and narrative tension of the work. This research analyzes how Sondheim integrates multiple character arcs, constructs a complex narrative, and expands the narrative possibilities of modern musical theater through this sequence. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, this study employs text analysis and literature review to conduct an in-depth examination of the structural, lyrical, and narrative characteristics of the opening sequence. Primary research materials include the script, score, performance recordings of Into the Woods, and related critical literature. Additionally, a comparative analysis of Sondheim’s other works highlights his distinctive narrative strategies. The findings indicate that this opening sequence not only introduces characters and plot elements but also functions as a unifying device that foreshadows the musical’s central themes. Through recur- ring lyrics and intertextual language, the sequence connects individual character desires and reveals how these desires interact throughout the narrative. Furthermore, this study discusses the impact of Sondheim’s narrative innovations on contemporary musical theater and positions Into the Woods as a significant example of musical theater’s evolving storytelling techniques. By deepening the under- standing of Sondheim’s narrative strategies and the musical genre, this study aims to provide a val- uable analytical framework for future musical research and creative endeavors.
