Abstract

According to Rancière, the 18th century was the period in which aesthetics was born, the French Revolution was triggered, and also the era of landscape. In this era, landscape appears not as a spectacle of nature for aesthetic experience, but as an object of specific thought. In the era of landscape, gardens are elevated to the status of fine arts such as paintings, and numerous garden aesthetics and theories emerge around British landscape gardens. In particular, in the representative regime of arts centered on Mimesis, art is an imitation of nature and nature here is considered an abstract internal principle, but in the appearance of the Pictureque garden, nature becomes an artist by itself, and the garden becomes a scene for nature as an artist. The nature of the garden as a non-art becomes an invader of the existing art category, and invokes an aesthetic revolution by dismantling the vertical hierarchy of the art of the representative regime. In addition, the landscape created by the garden in this era is a reflection of the social and political order, the social and political order takes on descriptions akin to those of a landscape, and the garden becomes a place where the aesthetics and the politics of the landscape converge.
