Abstract
Cho Kicheon’s 『Baekdoosan』 has been known as one of the most prominent epic poems in North Korea. 『Baekdoosan』, for the first time, described what Korean literature should exactly speak about. First of all, 『Baekdoosan』said the Kim Il-Sung wasthe founder of the nation and hero of his people’s liberation. Although he does not frequently appear in this work, Kim Il-Sung is in the core of every detail as well as each phase of the poem. Cho described Kim Il-Sung as not only a military general but also a perfect leader endowed with wisdom and morality. I would not call it derived froma “simple idolization”. Many critics in those days said that all the virtues of communist leaders in Manchuriain 1930’s merged into the description about Kim in this work. In this aspect, Kim’s image in 『Baekdoosan』can be differentiated from that of “JooChe-ism”, where all those good points were appropriated as if they are parts of his original nature. 『Baekdoosan』 was highly evaluated in North Korea because it showed integration between lyric and epic as well as harmony between romantic skill and realistic conception. So-called “revolutionary romanticism” spread all over the work. “Revolutionary Romanticism” meant the courage and the will with which people get through their current ordeal toward the future. To make it possible, they needed to have a strong belief in their future. The belief was enabled by Proletarian science in colonial era, but was supported by a strong leader, a perfect human being with full of wisdom and goodness. In that aspect, the image of Kim Il-Sung in the work was the cause of “Revolutionary Romanticism” and also the result of it. 『Baekdoosan』put the leader in the center of the concentric circle of moral influences. It also described interactive relationship between the nature and the human being as well as “inter-penetration” between the myth and the real world. The success of 『Baekdoosan』stimulated the interests and studies on epic in North Korea, and the epic became one of the major genres of North Korean literature. I should say it anachronistic because the epic itself is already out-dated.The anachronism was acceptable because the special features and needs of the North Korean society which want to mobilize their people. The world in epic belongs to the “absolute past”, not to be accessed by any of the personal experiences. This “absolute past” is not to be interpreted, but to be worshiped “absolutely”. While a “narrative”, in its essential, recognizes the world, indicates how to respond, The anti-Japanese narrative in epic poem materialized the life of people and their way of thinking. It was the reason epic was constantly needed to describe the resistance to Japan. The history of literature in North Korea was that of binding through epic.
