Abstract

The main assumption of this paper is the narrative of anti-Japanese armed struggle functioned decisively in the process that Kim-ilsung became North Korean leader. To concretize this point, I considered the meaning and effect of narrative. And I explained the situation that the word like ‘nation’, ‘independence’ and ‘democracy’ acted as master signifier, and I describe how Kim-ilsung, introduced as a national hero just after the Liberation, had seized that master signifier. To shed a light on the course that Kim-ilsung fixed as an icon through the narrative was the aim and content of this paper. I analysed the narcissism of respect and affection that requested by the narrative of anti-Japanese armed struggle, and I tried to make clear the reason why he could reign not only as political leader but also spiritual and moral master. Besides, through the reading of the epic Bakdusan(1947) written by Jo-gicheon who brought forward the basic form of how to represent Kim-ilsung and his armed struggle, I delineated the aspect of narcissism of respect and affection make spectacle and how the spectacle suggest Kim-ilsung as an icon. The location of (political) sovereignty was what I questioned in this paper. If the narrative of Kim-ilsung made him omnipotent leader, that narrative must be a dwelling place of sovereignty. That is what I said in this paper.
